As most of you know, some in the community were disappointed with Days of Wonder’s release of a couple of expansions for their Commands & Colors (C&C) games before they headed off to GenCon. Within 10 days of the outcry summarized in this thread, DoW announced the complete sale of all things BattleLore to Fantasy Flight Games. While shocking nearly everyone, most seemed to think this was a good thing. However, concerns linger over the direction of the game and what an FFG BattleLore might look like.

I do not claim to speak for the majority of the BattleLore community, so I would like the community to speak for itself. This is the only C&C game that I followed from the first hyped press release to the inception through the mixture of expansions and continued to hang with until last week’s announcement of the sale. I plan to follow it over to FFG and do what I can as a fan to help promote it through this transition and alleged rebirth. While this is not my favorite title in the series (though I still rank it high), it is the one I feel closest to in watching the development.

What this GeekList attempts to accomplish is give FFG what I feel have been the hot topics of the BattleLore community and show what the community in general wants done with these topics. Different issues have different priorities for me and what I expect to happen in each topic is my own opinion.

What I hope the BattleLore community will do is help by expressing to FFG how important these issues are to them:

1) By thumbing the entry topics to show importance/priority,
2) By selecting their preferred result by voting in the poll, and
3) By adding their own entry topics to include topics I overlooked.

I attempted to capture what I felt are most people’s range of answers but unfortunately will not be able to add more answer options in my polls.

Please respect everyone’s opinions on this list. It is not meant to start a flame war or lengthy debates on what is the right or wrong path for BattleLore. It is meant to showcase the variety of possibilities that is out there for the system and collect our opinions in one thread for FFG. Remember, they probably haven’t had the chance to ride the roller coaster of the past 2 years and read all our thoughts before. Let's try to gather them all here so nothing gets missed.

Thank you for your participation,
Brian

EDIT: For some reason, the list is displaying that answers were already selected when you first open this up. As best I can tell, this is a display bug only. It is not registering any data until you actually click on the options and select "Vote." From what I gather, it has to do with the interface between GeekLists and the thread the poll was created in. (It is also not automatically refreshing the number of votes either - so you may need to toggle back and forth between Questions and Results.)

Trust me, this is not a conspiracy on my part! If it were, my answers would be winning. ;)

1. Communication [Average Rating:6.50 Unranked]

The basic breakdown with this system was communication. Fans had their own expectations of the system and tried to communicate that to DOW. DOW rarely returned the favor. Instead, they decided, because of previous unmet goals, to not release info until an expansion was ready to be released. This did not allow a buzz to really get going and caused the momentum of the game to continually brake. An unsuccessful fix was to leak info to 3rd parties but lack of official follow-up left the same empty feeling.

Communication will be key in starting the momentum up in the right direction.

Poll
What level of communication do you expect from FFG on upcoming products?
1) I want to know everything! Every date, every setback, everything!
2) I want to know what is coming out and a fairly accurate date of when it will be available
3) I just want a general outline of the direction with loose dates (years, quarters, months as the time approaches) with periodic updates on progress
4) Let me know a few months out what can be expected so I can budget and get excited about the upcoming release
5) I don’t want to know anything until the items hit the shelves
6) Other (please elaborate below)

Well said. And while they're at it, release some trolls, a spiteful dragon or two, a flesh-eating horde of undead, and some dark elves. Please, no more cow-riding dwarves!

DOW crafted a vision of what BattleLore should be and how they wanted to express it. While the questions below delve into this topic in more detail, this is a question of how closely you would like the general direction to follow DOW's vision vs. FFG's vision.

Poll: Question 2: Vision
Whose vision should reign in the future of BattleLore?
1) It is necessary for FFG to fully embrace the DOW vision or I won’t support the game any longer
2) DOW established the game and FFG must respect the foundation that was built; new concepts can be introduced only if they keep it in the context of that foundation
3) It needs to be a blend of the DOW vision and the FFG vision
4) FFG purchased the game and it is their right to do what they want but I want to know it is the same game
5) It is necessary for FFG to fully reject the DOW vision or I won’t support the game any longer
6) Other (please elaborate below)

I picked #2 here, but it sounds more constricting than I believe I intend. What I mean by here is that I would like to see R. Borg's ideas for the game implemented. Perhaps DoW wasn't doing that in the first place (not my opinion), so things may be adhering to that and cause change.

I do like the art associated with BL and hope that it continues with the same artists/designers if possible.

Ultimately the reason I play so much BattleLore and Ancients is due to the gameplay. BL by its nature has a lot more wiggle room here than Ancients and Memoir '44, interesting to see how FFG handles this.

I would be very much annoyed if FFG decided to immediately re-release the game and expansions with new art, production value, pieces etc. Whilst I understand that they can't really be expected to publish a game identical to what DoW had...still I would feel as though I've burned holes into my wallet.

FFG, the next Hasbro? - why does it seem like every time I log into BGG FFG have bought something old of someone else's under their wing?

I think at this point DoW made such a complete hash of Battlelore that you can't turn around and start limitations on what Fantasy Flight should or should not do. Fantasy Flight is in my opinion an amazing company. We've seen what they've done with things like Arkham Horror, Britannia and alike. They have a solid track record. Battlelore is a fantastic system. Whatever direction they go I think folks need to trust them to take this system and do with it what needs to be done to make it fulfill it's potential.

I trust FFG...to a degree. It would be naive of me to voice my distaste at all the expansions FFG pump out without first realising that DoW are far more guilty of that action and that it is a way for company's to generate funds, and also that fans demand expansions.

At one point or another, I've owned and played almost all of Borg's games of this card/hex/mini driven nature and I think I wouldn't bother buying a reprint of this title nor its expansions if they aren't somehow "compatible" with what I currently have.

Personally, the way FFG have handled their acquisition of Rackham's Confrontation/At-43 line doesn't leave me with much confidence but then again, those weren't board games. I'll reserve further thoughts for when FFG's Battlelore eventuates.

While I'm sure FFG will find interesting new directions for the game, I do wish they retain the lighthearted art style and don't overload it with a heavy ruleset.

The art/style of fantasy creatures as races in the 100 year war is what immediately drew me to BattleLore, because it is different from the high/dark fantasy settings that have been done to death. I do feel that DoW dropped the ball by not expanding on it with new flavoured race expansions and I hope FFG picks this up, but not with the standard fantasy fare we've seen a thousand times already.

I also have no doubt that FFG is capable of producing interesting new rulessets to broaden/deepen the game, I'm fearful for a rules overload. It's not that I'm afraid of new rules being introduced, because BattleLore was set up as a tiered game system where you can adjust the difficulty by choosing which 'rulelayers' to use. What I am afraid of is FFG following it's usual path of trying to come up with very complete rulessets that explain everything without any level of abstraction. For example: I don't mind 3 extra summary cards for 3 new monsters, but I do mind if a creature comes out that needs 3 summary cards all by itself.

BattleLore is, at it's heart a lighthearted and light wargame on which can be applied several layers of complexity. I hope it stays that way.

I hope the FF product is compatible with the existing products and not a complete re-imagining of it. I dont need two copies of battlelore.
