In general most games come with everything you need to play your game and store it. Some game companies like GMT provide little ziplocks to help you store your counters. Z-Man provided a nice number of baggies in Agricola. But some of us like a little bit more than your standard issue when it comes to our games. We want more in terms of storage, protection and organization for our games.

I actually have a little plastic storage box that I have full of game accessories. In it you'll find dice trays, extra Chessex dice, card holders and things of that nature. So this list is about accessories. The things we could do without but make gaming a bit easier and more fun.

Card Holders

I use to not use card holders until Memoir '44 came along and they came with a nifty set of card holders. They were great because you could see your entire hand, the text on the cards and not have to keep fiddling with your cards. I liked them so much I managed to get myself an extra set of them which I use generally for some of the card driven wargames like Shifting Sands or For The People.

You can buy card holders, but I recommend you buy card/dominoe holders. These trays have large slots for dominoes, but they also have a tighter slot for cards. I bought mine on ebay few years ago for five bucks for a set of four. They really help little kids and they are also a blessing for games where huge hands of cards are the norm. These trays are plastic and are beige in color. If you google search them you can find numerous companies selling them. I personally have eight of them and take them where ever I go.

Could you provide a link to a shop that sells these? I am having a heck of a time trying to buy some that will hold more than just 2 or 3 cards...

I have two quadraplegic friends I sometimes game with. This goes to the "necessary" side of things for them :) It's nice because they can have cards only they can see, and tell you to pick "third from the left" etc., to play something. Works ok except sometimes the print on the cards is so small it can't be read from that far away.

My daughters have trouble holding their card hands in Ticket to Ride. I used the Memoir card holders a few times but have recently switched to the Ingenious card holders. They are a little heftier and less likely to be knocked over when reaching.

I personally love fiddling with cards in my hands and would toss aside a card holder if given one. Maybe it's hard for some people to understand and I certainly don't want to attempt to rationalize it, but from shifting cards around in M:tg to peeling your cards in poker....it just feels good.

Dice Trays

I love dice trays. I have 4 of the Koplow dice trays you see pictured here. Great for dice rolling needless to say. I also find them useful sometimes for 2 player games. Each player gets 2. One for rolling dice and another for putting chits in and such. Helps keep them all in one place instead of being loose on the table.

I have this exact dice tray and it works fine. I especially like it for those scatter rollers who can never seem to keep the dice on the table.

I have a nice round one. Love to roll the dice in it!

Bought it at the local Toys "R" Us.

These are great! I didn't even know such a thing existed. Much more satisfying (and compact) than using a box cover I imagine. And for some reason, I don't think I'd like a dice tower. This just seems better to me.

When we bought our house, the previous owner left behind about 30 cigar boxes. After a little cleanup, they work great.

I've seen people use cigar boxes as well. You can get some felt from a craft store and glue it into the bottom.

One of these has been firmly on my want list for a while now (a circular one of course).

A nice felt lined game of Shut The Box works great for this. It's obviously meant for rolling dice. And if another player is suffering from AP, Hey! what do you know, there's another game right here on the table.
